The U.S. Navy body fat method uses circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. For males, it uses waist and neck measurements relative to height. For females, it adds hip measurement. While not as accurate as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, the Navy method is free, quick, and reasonably accurate within 3-4% for most people.

Body fat categories vary by gender. For men, 6-13% is athletic, 14-17% is fitness, 18-24% is average, and 25%+ is obese. For women (who naturally carry more essential fat), 14-20% is athletic, 21-24% is fitness, 25-31% is average, and 32%+ is obese. Fat mass and lean mass are calculated from your body fat percentage and total weight.
