How to estimate your take-home pay

  1. 1 Select whether you are paid an annual salary or an hourly rate. If hourly, also enter your hours per week.
  2. 2 Enter your pay amount and select your pay frequency — weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly.
  3. 3 Choose your filing status (single, married filing jointly, or head of household) for federal tax bracket calculation.
  4. 4 Enter your state income tax rate. Use 0% for states with no income tax like Texas, Florida, and Washington.
  5. 5 Optionally enter per-paycheck pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) contributions or HSA payments, then click Calculate.

Understanding your take-home pay helps you budget accurately and make informed decisions about job offers, raises, and retirement contributions. This calculator estimates your net pay by subtracting federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA contributions (Social Security and Medicare) from your gross pay. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and HSA contributions reduce your taxable income, so including them gives you a more accurate result.

Federal income tax is calculated using progressive tax brackets, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. The calculator uses current US tax brackets and applies the standard deduction based on your filing status. State tax is applied as a flat percentage, which is a simplification since some states also use progressive brackets. For states with no income tax (TX, FL, WA, NV, SD, WY, AK, NH, TN), enter 0%.

FICA taxes include Social Security at 6.2% on income up to the wage base limit and Medicare at 1.45% on all income. Together these account for 7.65% of your gross pay before any deductions. The effective tax rate shown in the results tells you what percentage of your gross income goes to all taxes and deductions combined, which is useful for comparing the true cost of taxes across different salary levels.
