How to Use the Profit Margin Calculator

Profit margin measures how much of each dollar of revenue is actual profit. Gross margin = (Revenue - COGS) / Revenue shows production efficiency. Operating margin factors in overhead costs. Net margin is the bottom line after all expenses and taxes.

Markup and margin are different: if you buy for $60 and sell for $100, your margin is 40% but your markup is 66.7%. Healthy margins vary by industry — software companies may have 70%+ gross margins, while retail might be 25-30%. Track margins over time to spot trends.
